What "thin", "sparse" and "short" mean for a set
These are three different things, and each one changes the set a little:
- Sparse means fewer lashes, or gaps along the line. The fix is fans, which cover more of the line per lash.
- Thin or fine means each lash is delicate. The fix is lighter fibers and lengths the lash can carry.
- Short means the lashes themselves are short. The fix is curl, and accepting that the extensions can only go a little longer than your own.
Many people have more than one. At the consultation I look at how many lashes you have, how strong they are and how long they grow, and the set comes from that.
Which set works best
| Set | On thin, sparse or short lashes | Full set |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | One extension per lash, so it cannot fill gaps; lovely on short but evenly spaced lashes | $140 |
| Hybrid | Singles for texture, small fans where the gaps are; my usual first suggestion | $160 |
| Volume | Soft fans of three to five fine extensions per lash; the fullest look for a sparse line | $190 |
| Wet Set | Closed bundles do not bridge wide gaps; better on moderate to full lashes | $175 |
| Mega Volume | Dense fans that need sturdy lashes to sit on; not the place to start | $240 |
Classic sets stick to one extension on one lash, so they cannot fill noticeable gaps; if your lashes are sparse, classic extensions can make the spacing more obvious rather than hide it [1]. Volume is a small fan of three to five very fine extensions on each natural lash. The fans spread out and fill in gaps, so the lash line looks full and dark even if your own lashes are fine or sparse. Hybrid mixes both, so I can put fans exactly where the gaps are and keep singles where your lashes are fuller [3].
A Wet Set's closed bundles do not spread across wide gaps the way open fans do, so it suits a moderate to full lash line best [4]. And mega fans need sturdy lashes to sit on, so they suit a full, healthy lash line [5].
How long they can go
The rule I keep: an extension should not be more than 2 to 3 mm longer than the natural lash it sits on [2]. On short lashes that means the extensions are short too. It is the one rule I will not bend. A long extension on a short or weak lash works like a lever on the root every time you blink, and over time that pull can make the lash fall out early [6].
The good news is that length is not what makes short lashes look better. Curl and darkness do. A lifted curl opens the eye from the base, and the fans in a Hybrid or Volume set add the darkness at the lash line that reads as "more lashes". My curl and length guide explains the curls.
Straight lashes that point down
Short lashes often grow straight out or point down. The flat-based L and M curls are made for straight or downward lashes [2]: the base sits along your lash and then lifts. That lift is what makes short lashes finally show.
Will extensions make thin lashes worse?
Not if the set is matched to your lashes and you look after it. Each extension, or each fan, goes on one natural lash, never across several stuck together, and it sheds when that lash sheds. What damages lashes is picking at them, sleeping face down on them, and cheap glue [7]. My guide to lash damage goes through it, and I check your natural lashes at every fill [6].
Some thinning is not about extensions at all. It is normal to lose between one and five lashes a day [8]. But the American Academy of Ophthalmology says to consult your physician right away in three cases. One is lash loss on both lids, another is also losing hair on your eyebrows or scalp, and the third is itching, redness or scaling. If that sounds like you, see a doctor before you book a set.
What about lash serums?
People ask me whether to use a growth serum before or with extensions. That is a doctor question, not a lash artist question. The AAO says over-the-counter lash serums may cause sensitivity or reactions in some people, and to consult an ophthalmologist to decide whether they are right for you [8].
Keeping a set on fine lashes
- No water or steam for the first 24 hours, then wash them every day with a gentle, oil-free lash cleanser [7].
- Brush them daily with a clean spoolie, and never rub, pull or pick [7].
- Sleep on your back or side so they are not crushed [7].
- Keep to the fill rhythm. Sparse lines show gaps sooner, so a fill closer to two weeks keeps them even.
A Hybrid fill is $90 within 2 weeks of your last set and $110 at 2 to 3 weeks, and a Volume fill is $105 or $130; past three weeks it is a new set [9]. Fills are only for sets I did. If another artist did your set, book a new set and tell me in the notes, and I take the old one off first.
Every set includes the consultation, the mapping of your lashes, the application and the aftercare walkthrough [9]. A $25 deposit holds your time and comes off your total. Reschedule with more than 24 hours notice and your deposit moves to the new time at no charge. Cancel inside 24 hours and the $25 deposit is not returned, plus a $20 cancellation fee.
First time booking a full set? Use code FIRST20 at checkout for $20 off. One per client, and it comes off the balance you pay on the day, not off the deposit. It does not apply to fills.
Questions about extensions on thin or short lashes
Can you get lash extensions with thin lashes?
Yes. Thin or sparse lashes do well with light, small fans, usually a Hybrid or a Volume set, because the fans fill gaps without much weight. The extensions stay within 2 to 3 mm of your own lashes, and Mega Volume waits until your lashes are sturdier.
What are the best lash extensions for short lashes?
A set with a lifted curl and some fans, usually a Hybrid, with extensions no more than 2 to 3 mm longer than your own lashes. For short lashes that grow straight or point down, an L or M curl lifts them from the base. Curl and darkness do more for short lashes than length.
Do lash extensions thin your natural lashes?
Not when each extension sits on its own lash, the length and weight suit that lash, and you do not pick or rub. Thinning comes from sets that are too heavy, lashes glued together, and pulling extensions off. If your lashes are thinning on both lids, see a doctor.
