How to make a set last
Extensions take mascara, curlers and strip lashes out of your morning. How long a set lasts, and how clean it stays, comes down to what you do after I leave.
A lot of first-timers think extensions should be left alone and kept dry for weeks. The opposite is true. Skip washing and skin oil, dead skin and dust build up along the lash line, weaken the glue, and leave your eyes feeling gritty.
None of it is hard. A few daily habits keep the set on, keep your own lashes healthy, and keep everything clean and even between fills.
| Care Phase | Recommended Action | Underlying Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| First 24 hours | No water or steam on the lashes: no shower spray on your face, sauna, swimming or heavy sweating. | Allows adhesive bonds to stabilize without premature moisture disruption. |
| Daily Cleansing | Wash lash line daily with an oil-free foaming lash wash; pat dry gently. | Removes natural skin oil, dead skin cells, and desert dust that gradually weaken bond retention. |
| Grooming (When Dry) | Roll a clean spoolie gently through extension tips to separate fibers. | Prevents crossing or tangling of fibers; preserves fan symmetry without pulling on follicles. |
| Sleep Routine | Sleep on your back or rest on a smooth silk or satin pillowcase. | Reduces fabric friction and snagging against extension fibers overnight. |
| Every 2 to 3 Weeks | Schedule a maintenance fill (Hybrid is $90 within 2 weeks, $110 at 2 to 3 weeks) [1]. | Replaces shed lashes and removes outgrown extensions as natural hair cycles. |
The first 24 hours
The first 24 hours after a set or a fill matter. The glue is dry to the touch in seconds but keeps setting for hours after I finish, so keep water and steam off your lashes for the first 24 hours.
Can I shower after getting lash extensions?
Yes, after the first 24 hours. Until then, wash around your eyes and keep water and steam off your lashes: do not stand face-first under the spray, and skip saunas, hot tubs, swimming and heavy sweating.
- Keep Water off Your Lashes: On day one you can shower, but keep your face out of the spray and keep the bathroom fan on so steam does not build up.
- Delay Saunas, Hot Tubs, and Swimming: Submerging extensions in water or exposing them to high-heat steam rooms too early can disrupt stabilizing bonds and lead to premature shedding.
- Avoid Heavy Sweating: Vigorous workouts produce perspiration carrying facial oils that can penetrate stabilizing bonds.
- Refrain from Touching: Avoid picking, pulling, or rubbing your eyes, as natural skin oils from fingers transfer to the bond line.
Wash them every day
Can you wash your lash extensions with water?
Yes, after the first 24 hours. From then on water does not hurt your extensions. Washing them every day is the single best habit for keeping them on and keeping your eyelids comfortable.
Your eyelids make oil all day, and in Las Vegas there is dust in the air too. Left alone, that mix builds up at the lash roots, weakens the glue, and makes your eyes feel gritty.
Clean lids are comfortable lids.
Step-by-Step Eyelid Cleansing Routine:
- Dispense a pump of oil-free foaming lash cleanser onto a soft cleansing brush.
- Close your eyes and gently glide the foam downward from the eyelid base toward the tips of the lashes. Avoid aggressive side-to-side scrubbing.
- Rinse thoroughly with cool or lukewarm water until all cleanser residue is rinsed clean.
- Gently press a clean, lint-free cloth against closed eyelids to absorb excess moisture. Avoid rubbing with looped cotton towels that can catch on extension fibers.
- Allow lashes to air dry completely. Once dry, roll a clean spoolie gently through the tips to separate and align the fibers.
What to keep away from them
A few things in your skincare and makeup will take a set down early. Check the labels for:
- Heavy Oils: Plant oils, mineral oils, squalane, and facial oil serums can weaken adhesive bonds over time.
- Waterproof Makeup and Mascara: Waterproof mascaras and eyeliners contain waxes and polymers that require oil-based removers to dissolve. Applying mascara to extensions clogs volume fans and makes thorough cleansing difficult.
- Eyelash Curlers: Never clamp eyelash curlers onto extensions. The crimping action fractures the synthetic fibers and risks pulling out natural lashes from the follicle.
How to sleep
How you sleep shows up in your lashes. Face-down, or pressed into a firm pillow, and the side you sleep on will thin out faster than the other.
To reduce sleep-related lash wear:
- Rest on Your Back: Sleeping on your back eliminates facial contact with bedding, supporting even retention across both eyes.
- Use Silk or Satin Pillowcases: If you are a side sleeper, resting on a smooth silk or satin pillowcase reduces surface friction, allowing extensions to glide smoothly without snagging.
- Contoured Sleep Masks: If you prefer using a sleep mask, select a 3D contoured mask featuring recessed eye cavities that arch over the lashes without contacting the fibers.
Fills
How often do lash extensions need a fill?
Every 2 to 3 weeks. Your lashes shed a few every day, so over two to three weeks the set thins out. A fill is $80 to $135 within 2 weeks of your last set and $95 to $165 at 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the set; after 3 weeks it is a full set, because rebuilding the line takes the full appointment time.
To keep your lash line looking balanced and full, regular maintenance fills are recommended every 2 to 3 weeks [1]. At NaahiXtension, a Hybrid fill is $90 within 2 weeks of your last set and $110 at 2 to 3 weeks. Full sets are priced at Classic $140, Hybrid $160, Wet Set $175, Volume $190, and Mega Volume $240. Fills are only for sets I did. If another artist did your set, book a new set and tell me in the notes, and I take the old one off first.
